Tournament season is here!
May 21, 2008
Hello to all NTC members,
First, I hope to see you all at the
annual fundraiser on Saturday. We'll be giving out last year's awards so if
you were a finalist try and be there. We'll start at 12:15ish with the prizes.
Then we'll have some fun playing doubles raising money for a great cause.
Next, tournament season is upon us. For those who still want to enter a
tournament, I can get still get you into all but the Mixed Doubles (which kicks
off first). We've got some changes to discuss for those entered in the various
tournaments. This year we have some general rules to discuss regarding the
scheduling of the matches.
As you know the matches each have a scheduled weekend. This year all the matches
will have start times of 12 noon or 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday. However, you
may play the matches later in the day if agreed by all players. We must try to
avoid playing at 10 am or even 11 am if possible. 11:30 is ok. If you intend to
change or if I give you a time that is not good, then contact your opponents
right away and see about changing the time. Usually not a problem at all.
Now the new rule. If you have a conflict on a Saturday and know in advance, then
play the match early before that weekend. All the draws will be posted following
Memorial Weekend so you will have the draw long in advance of most of the
tournaments.
If the conflict is on Sunday then you will have 3 weeks to reschedule the match
with the onus on the person with the conflict to get that match scheduled. That
means you may have to accommodate your opponents and be flexible. Obviously the
opponents should act in good faith to get the match played. I don't expect any
problems, but I will be the ultimate arbiter if a match is not played on time.
If it is not played on time, absent good cause, you will be defaulted.
For those who didn't join a particular event because the weekend scheduled was
not good you may wish to reconsider. I am taking applicants through Saturday
5/24 at 8pm. Those who have already contacted me with conflicts, I appreciate
that and I will work with you to accommodate and see that we play all the
matches we can. Any future conflicts you should always contact me and your
opponents when you first learn of it. The key is that no one abuses the
flexibility. It should not be used because of injury. Be courteous to the fact
that your opponents may have cancelled plans to be present for the tournament so
I implore you to notify all those involved of any conflict ASAP so that they
don't feel slighted. This is intended to be used only when absolutely necessary
and I implore you all to be mindful that others gave up their plans.
Certain tournaments have a different schedule altogether. Women's Singles has 5
participants (still taking entrants?) and will be played throughout the summer.
Women's 60's doubles and Men's 60's Doubles are in August. With the draw up, you
are free to play the matches as early as possible. It is conceivable that you
might finish the matches before August rolls around and that's ok too.
I would ask that if you play a match at a different time you let me know so that
I can issue an e-mail with upcoming matches and their times.
Since mixed doubles is around the corner, it might be difficult to utilize the
early play feature of this system. I will work with you. Just keep me in the
loop. The mixed draw is complete. Though the times are set, I have laid out
dates by which each match MUST be played. So this tournament will sort of have
its own scheduling if the pre determined times and dates don't work out.
I STILL NEED ONE WOMEN TO BALANCE OUT WOMEN'S MATCHED PAIRS set for July 12th
and 13th.
Finally, some of you joined without a partner. For some I assigned a partner.
for others, you may find one by Saturday evening (ok I'll let it go to Sunday)
but this will permit new members and others to find someone to play with.
So here's the Mixed schedule, the draw will be up on 5/21.

I trust we will have some great matches and great sportsmanship as always, but
most importantly some great fun.
To contact me regarding tournaments please either call me at 516 361 0491 or
email me at johnrsordi@yahoo.com (make sure you don't call John Sordi senior by
mistake). If possible put the gist of your message in the subject of the e-mail
so I can find later on more easily. Thank you all.
Oh yeah, a special thanks to my tournament committee, though our work is not all
complete. Your assistance with knowledge of the players can only help to ensure
that we have the most balanced draws possible. I will be contacting you
regarding some new additions.
Looking forward to this weekend.
